Gua Cerita in Langkawi

By: Dinesh Patairya

Gua Cerita, which can be literally translated as the Cave of Legends, is a mysterious cave in Langkawi island of Malaysia. Shrouded in legendary tales of mystery and romance, it instills a distinct feeling in the visitors. One gets to see some unique rock formations, and cannot resist oneself from admiring these.

A Limestone Marvel

Gua Cherita is made of two limestone caves one atop the other. Overlooking the azure waters of the sea, the cave is linked with innumerable legends. Thousands of travelers arrive every here to have a look of this limestone marvel.

The Legend of Garuda

A folklore associates Gua Cerita to the Battle of the Big Birds. It says that once, the Kings of Rome and China planned to marry their children. However, the Garuda (the divine phoenix) opposed the idea because he comprehended that the unification of two such great powers would pose threat to the other small kingdoms. So he kidnapped the Chinese princess and hid her in this cave.

Thereafter he crushed the forces of the Chinese emperor, Merong Maha Wangsa. In a fierce battle with Garuda, the Roman Prince fell into the sea. The waves carried him to the very

island where the Princess was imprisoned. Both of them married at the place which is now known as Gua Cerita.

The Inscription

In the lower chamber of the cave, one can see the walls etched with some old Arabic script. The inscription acquaints us with the story of Sheikh Baharuddin who died on the 9th day of the sixth month in year 68 of the Muslim era. The inscription is believed to have been written in 1754 AD during the reign of Sultan Mohamed Jiwa II of Kedah.

How to Reach

The cave is easily accessible by boat from Tanjung Rhu. After getting down from the boat, you just have to walk a little, and you would reach Gua Cerita.

Even with legends aside, Gua Cherita is a nice place to visit during your Malaysia vacations and have some gala time with your family and friends.
