The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Malaysia is the heavily modernized city of Kuala Lumpur which has become an internationally recognized symbol of the country. But Malaysia is a diverse nation that has much more to offer beyond a modern city especially when considering the islands nature and cultural attractions.

Kota Kinabalu is a coastal city in Malaysia that presents a relatively quieter side of the country. Despite having modern structures it is nowhere near as urbanized as the capital Kuala Lumpur and has many nature related attractions nearby.

Numerous attractions can be found here but one of the most popular is undeniably the beach. Tanjung Aru Beach has traditionally been well-liked for its food, but it has evolved in to an often visited area for family gatherings. But avoiding all the attractions on the beach, travellers can enjoy the cool breeze and expansive view.

There are also various islands located off Kota Kinabalu that are popular amongst tourists. Visitors will have to board a small motor powered boat along the shoreline to travel to the island of their choice.

One such island is Manukan Island which takes around 25 minutes to get fr

om Kota Kinbalu by speedboat. This island is extremely popular for water activities due to the clear waters that surround it. Visitors regularly snorkel, swim and go kayaking from this Manukan Island. The option of going on a scenic jog is also on offer through the 1.5 mile jogging trail.

The Klias Wetlands is a two hour drive from Kota Kinabalu but is well worth the effort. This mangrove forest reserve is home to a formidable array of indigenous life that is mainly dominated by monkeys but also includes various bird species and other animals such as Water Buffalo. The environment here is also pleasing to the senses with fresh air, lakes, and trees that create a pleasing atmosphere.

For travellers to Malaysia staying in a Kota Kinabalu hotel will provide access to numerous worthwhile destinations. Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort, Kota Kinabalu is presents all the benefits of a Sabah hotel combined with resort facilities providing the best of both.
